How to use The Compost Bin.

Welcome to The Compost Bin, which contains my musings on my life. I live in Herefordshire with my husband and 11 year old daughter. We have 4 acres of land which contains a woodland, small orchard, garden and veg plot. We grow our own organic fruit and veg and make lots of cider, wine, jam and chutney. We share our lives with 16 Chickens, 3 Cats, 4 Guinea Pig and assorted wildlife!

I am a freelance Forest School Leader and Environmental Educator so work with both adults and children on all sorts of things. I also volunteer as a Master Composter and Master Gardener, helping people make compost and grow veg.

So, I might talk about; what we have been doing on our patch of land and in our wood, my work, the chickens and their funny ways, how to grow veg, the fun things our cats get up to, self sufficiency and what it actually means, more general environmental issues, composting, making various crafty stuff, happy and sad times here, living a slower, more hand made, frugal lifestyle, making and mending and re-using and re-cycling stuff, living more lightly on the Earth and my views on life in general.

I hope you enjoy your time spent inside The Compost Bin. I would also love to welcome you as a member of The Compostbin forum

Today I have .....pricked out many, many tomato plants - they are about 6 inches high and I have now got 6 plants of each variety in a multi cell cell and another 4 in individual pots.

I have grown;

Pink Cherry, Red Cherry, Aunty Madge, Gardeners Delight (Cherry)

Costoluto Fiorentino, Costoluto Genovese, Big Boy, Beefsteak, Black Russian, Amiee stuffing, Carlton (Beef)

Shirley, Moneymaker, Latah, Roma, Golden Sunrise, Yellow Perfection,

plus a few others I can't remember now...

I have about 170 plants all growing well, some in the cold frame in side the polytunnel ( those are mine!) and some in the porch conservatory ( which I will sell or give away.)

Have similar quantities of peppers, have grown Californian Wonder, Nardullo, Marconi Rosso, Romano and Hot Cayenne chilli.

We use a lot of tomatoes and now I dehydrate most of them we don't have the space storage issues in the freezers which we used to have to deal with.

These photos were taken 2 weeks ago when the seedlings were just over 2 weeks old.

Hello, came in to catch up as it's been ages, and I see you've been beavering away. I wanted to thank you for your earlier post about going to your Scrapstore - it led me to discover that most surprisingly, we also have one in Dorset, and it's not too far from me! I will now be adding that to my list of places to go and have a mooch in, the kids will love it. Must get the seeds out - all we've done so far is the spuds. Good luck with all the tomatoes! xx

Hi Sarah
Hope you're well. Congratulations on all the growing!
Just wanted to let you know the sad news that Mrs Flint (can't remember if she was Buffy or Willow) died today. It was very quick and very unexpected; she hadn't shown any signs of being under the weather. We're really sorry she's gone..but we do still have her 3 beautiful daughters.
Hope everything is OK with you
