How to use The Compost Bin.

Welcome to The Compost Bin, which contains my musings on my life. I live in Herefordshire with my husband and 11 year old daughter. We have 4 acres of land which contains a woodland, small orchard, garden and veg plot. We grow our own organic fruit and veg and make lots of cider, wine, jam and chutney. We share our lives with 16 Chickens, 3 Cats, 4 Guinea Pig and assorted wildlife!

I am a freelance Forest School Leader and Environmental Educator so work with both adults and children on all sorts of things. I also volunteer as a Master Composter and Master Gardener, helping people make compost and grow veg.

So, I might talk about; what we have been doing on our patch of land and in our wood, my work, the chickens and their funny ways, how to grow veg, the fun things our cats get up to, self sufficiency and what it actually means, more general environmental issues, composting, making various crafty stuff, happy and sad times here, living a slower, more hand made, frugal lifestyle, making and mending and re-using and re-cycling stuff, living more lightly on the Earth and my views on life in general.

I hope you enjoy your time spent inside The Compost Bin. I would also love to welcome you as a member of The Compostbin forum

New girls

A photo of one of my new hens, Coriander.

She and her sister Cumin are rescued ex free range organic hens, so not ex battery hens but still , have come from a very large flock and would have been dead, otherwise!

I got her and her sister as a swop for Spot the Cream Legbar Cockerel. He had taken to attacking me, aiming at my face, so he had to go, one way or another. I didn't really want to kill him so was pleased that a friend, J wanted him and was prepare to swap him for a couple of good laying hens.

We are having fun integrating these two into the established 10 hen family..especially as Coriander is obviously a VERY dominant hen who expects to be "the boss" We have had some quite nasty fights, already.....!

So..I suspect I have some fun and games to come, as I try to integrate them all in to one happy henny family....

Cumin is much quieter and very friendly , and Vanilla the remaining Cream Legbar is so friendly she follows me around like a puppy... and croons at me to pick her up :-)

Ah I do love my hens! Compostman is in the middle of building me a Mega Hen Pen , so they can all be kept safe from the foxy laidy who keeps visiting and eating my hens..

I really WANT to have Vanilla as a house hen pet..but hens are not easy to house train, so I can't...but she is SO cuddly and friendly...it is hard not to want to have her as a lap hen!

CG says "you spoil those hens Mummy!" and I guess she is right..

Oh just love your Henny stories and pictures, and Coriander looks so beautiful! I am so glad you have some new hens to love and bond with as you have had so many sad losses of late! Will be so glad when the hens are secure and that blasted fox will be unable to murder any more of your lovely ladies!!
Much Love, Jane xxx
