How to use The Compost Bin.

Welcome to The Compost Bin, which contains my musings on my life. I live in Herefordshire with my husband and 11 year old daughter. We have 4 acres of land which contains a woodland, small orchard, garden and veg plot. We grow our own organic fruit and veg and make lots of cider, wine, jam and chutney. We share our lives with 16 Chickens, 3 Cats, 4 Guinea Pig and assorted wildlife!

I am a freelance Forest School Leader and Environmental Educator so work with both adults and children on all sorts of things. I also volunteer as a Master Composter and Master Gardener, helping people make compost and grow veg.

So, I might talk about; what we have been doing on our patch of land and in our wood, my work, the chickens and their funny ways, how to grow veg, the fun things our cats get up to, self sufficiency and what it actually means, more general environmental issues, composting, making various crafty stuff, happy and sad times here, living a slower, more hand made, frugal lifestyle, making and mending and re-using and re-cycling stuff, living more lightly on the Earth and my views on life in general.

I hope you enjoy your time spent inside The Compost Bin. I would also love to welcome you as a member of The Compostbin forum

Fri. It was very wet today.....

So work was mainly undercover, inside the house or inside the shelter of the polytunnel.

I cleared and tidied the "lean to" which is our 3 and 3/4 sided work area/barn/food store/log store (it is quite big!) and made some more work space to do stuff in...

CM was then working  in the lean to, cutting up lots of timber to make the frame for the new walk in Mega Hen Pen. It is going to be made of of identical wood framed, mesh panels, and will be fixed together so it can be dismantled and moved, if needed.

I also spent several hours washing the inside and the outside of the polytunnel, thus letting in lots more light...a timely reminder to all of you to do the same in your undercover growing area, if you have not already....

I got very wet, though....as I have never mastered the art of squirting water overhead without getting water running down my arm....

Finally, I rearranged the inside of the polytunnel and than sowed more seeds ( brassicas and celeriac) and potted on another batch of various tomato plants. These went from their seed modules into individual 3 inch pots.

Later on inside the house I did some tidying up of the study and bedrooms, and a bit of college work.

Finally, some random photos of the wood, garden and hens...

Vanilla (right)  and Custard the Cream legbars. Sadly, Custard was taken by a fox last week....

Argh, still the fox trouble eh? What a shame :/ Gardening going apace even in the wet, or at least as much as can do, though hopefully better weather next week!
