Today was a sunny and moderately warm day here, and I managed to get a fair bit done .
I put on some washing and then hung it out, tidied up a bit down stairs, let out the hens and vaccumed upstairs and also did a lot of dusting( the sunlight made the dust visible....)
Now Compostman has finished boarding up the loft (hurrah) and floored it , we can store stuff up there, so things are slowly moving out from the study and guest room finally to be put in storage in the loft, where they ought to live :-)
(think things that get infrequent use.)
I am starting to see floor space in the Guest Bedroom. :-)
On the downside, although it is a dry day here today, it is a quagmire outside, especially where the hens live, so hens are plastered in mud...roll on drier weather is all I have to say. I have put down lots of straw on the muddiest patches to try to reduce the swamp ness....
But nearly ran out of straw, so I went into Ledbury to get feed and bedding for the hens and called in to a friend who is a large scale organic farmer with a wonderful farm shop. We chatted and I arranged a delivery of straw for the next week.
Compostman got out the electric propogators and checked them over for me in the afternoon, which was kind of him.
So tonight I settled down to make up my seed order, I went through all the seeds for both home and for school and have ordered where I need more, but ONLY where I need more. I *am* determined to reduce the "seed mountain" this year!
Although I have been thinking (and saying) I was behind with sowing...having gone through the seeds and looked at my planting diary for last year today, I actually sowed the first few this time last year...
Apart from the overwintering salad and herb greens , which are ongoing in the PT all winter.
So, tomorrow , a seedy sort of sunday I think!
Musings on living a different, more self sufficient life. Now with added forum to join! The Compostbin forum - full of ideas for living a more self reliant life.
How to use The Compost Bin.
Welcome to The Compost Bin, which contains my musings on my life. I live in Herefordshire with my husband and 11 year old daughter. We have 4 acres of land which contains a woodland, small orchard, garden and veg plot. We grow our own organic fruit and veg and make lots of cider, wine, jam and chutney. We share our lives with 16 Chickens, 3 Cats, 4 Guinea Pig and assorted wildlife!
I am a freelance Forest School Leader and Environmental Educator so work with both adults and children on all sorts of things. I also volunteer as a Master Composter and Master Gardener, helping people make compost and grow veg.
So, I might talk about; what we have been doing on our patch of land and in our wood, my work, the chickens and their funny ways, how to grow veg, the fun things our cats get up to, self sufficiency and what it actually means, more general environmental issues, composting, making various crafty stuff, happy and sad times here, living a slower, more hand made, frugal lifestyle, making and mending and re-using and re-cycling stuff, living more lightly on the Earth and my views on life in general.
I hope you enjoy your time spent inside The Compost Bin. I would also love to welcome you as a member of The Compostbin forum

This all sounds very familliar compost woman, the mountain of seeds and the dust in the sunlight, sigh... I know which I would rather be dealing with mind you, lol. xx
This is the DUSTIEST house I have ever lived in, honestly. I've considered getting an aircleaner and just dealing with the cost of running it because, truly, I've never seen dust accumulate in a house so fast. I dust weekly and it looks like I haven't done owt by Friday.
Sowing away here as well, with more on the way as friends are donating even more seeds, so huzzah!
My home is just like Hathors Bath.... and sunlight really shows up the dust!! Yikes!!
Getting around to a bit of seed sowing here.... looking forward very much to Spring and Summer... very much needed in this household!!
Hope you are feeling a little better????
Much Love, Jane xxxxx
I love being busy...
