How to use The Compost Bin.

Welcome to The Compost Bin, which contains my musings on my life. I live in Herefordshire with my husband and 11 year old daughter. We have 4 acres of land which contains a woodland, small orchard, garden and veg plot. We grow our own organic fruit and veg and make lots of cider, wine, jam and chutney. We share our lives with 16 Chickens, 3 Cats, 4 Guinea Pig and assorted wildlife!

I am a freelance Forest School Leader and Environmental Educator so work with both adults and children on all sorts of things. I also volunteer as a Master Composter and Master Gardener, helping people make compost and grow veg.

So, I might talk about; what we have been doing on our patch of land and in our wood, my work, the chickens and their funny ways, how to grow veg, the fun things our cats get up to, self sufficiency and what it actually means, more general environmental issues, composting, making various crafty stuff, happy and sad times here, living a slower, more hand made, frugal lifestyle, making and mending and re-using and re-cycling stuff, living more lightly on the Earth and my views on life in general.

I hope you enjoy your time spent inside The Compost Bin. I would also love to welcome you as a member of The Compostbin forum

Hen in the house

Yesterday a friend came round to collect some Master Composter supplies, as she is giving a talk later this week on composting. We had a good old chat, a wander around the garden, a look at my compost bins. A also stayed for lunch, which was a lovely treat for Compostman and I,to have company for lunch!

A was present when THE MOLE incident happened (which I will post about anon)

After she had left, and Compostman had gone to collect Compostgirl from school, I sat down for five mins with a cuppa in the sitting room.

Suddenly I spotted Cathy hen in the doorway and she came into the room and hopped up on my lap! I had left the back door open and she had come in through a hall, the kitchen (past Kitty Cat!) the inner hall and into where I was sitting!

I took her back out to the kitchen, wanting to get her back outside, but she promptly turned the other way into the futility room and started eating the cat food.....

Gosh, she made a mess....see the bits all over the floor?

She did peck them all up, though.... ;-))

She came in several more times yesterday evening and today wandered around the lower bit of kitchen, begging for crumbs...and tried to get through the cat flap into the futility room to get at the cat food I guess?

She follows us around in the garden as well, and comments on all that we do. And she purrs :-)

I think she must be happy!

She jumped on your lap!!! What a wonderful chook, LOL. You must be a very special lady as they do say animals (and birds of course) know.

Hello all!

I must admit I was gobsmacked by her jumping up like that

Coming into the house, yes she has done that before...although not into the main bit of the kitchen and certainly not into the main bit of the house to seek me out!

She did more of the same today LOL!

Compostgirl is entranced and wants to get her up stairs! eek! Hens are SO incontinent!

But I must admit it IS rather nice, that she so very obviously wants to be with *US*

Funny as an ex battery hen you would thing she wouldn't want to be anywhere near humans, wouldn;t you?

What a pretty hen! I think it would be really neat to have such a friendly chicken.

Aww, she sounds lovely. My 3 run for the backdoor whenever they see me in the window, and they try their best to get in. Never had any of them jump on my lap yet though. Good to see Cathy's feeling much better, I'd love to see her trying to get through the catflap

Cathy sounds like a lovely hen. Much like my ex batty called 'Chicken' - told you about her before. I think she thought she was a dog. Tell Compostgirl that given half a chance Cathy will be up the stairs in a trice! Probably deciding to roost on Compostgirls' bed!
Chicken, bless her, never seemed to 'go' indoors, but then she was a very special girl.

LOL - that's so lovely and funny. I left our French doors open the other day and one of our girls took an adventurous turn and hopped into our living room and had a good peck around until the boys gently shooshed her back out. :-d

These are good memories to have of Cathy, as sadly she had to be put to sleep today...

but still, she had a year of " the good life" with us, when she was due to be killed and made into cat food

Hiya,
My first visit to your pages.
I have to tell you how much I admired the concept of a 'futility room'.
We have a lot of those round our house ;-)
