Musings on living a different, more self sufficient life. Now with added forum to join! The Compostbin forum - full of ideas for living a more self reliant life.
How to use The Compost Bin.
Welcome to The Compost Bin, which contains my musings on my life. I live in Herefordshire with my husband and 11 year old daughter. We have 4 acres of land which contains a woodland, small orchard, garden and veg plot. We grow our own organic fruit and veg and make lots of cider, wine, jam and chutney. We share our lives with 16 Chickens, 3 Cats, 4 Guinea Pig and assorted wildlife!
I am a freelance Forest School Leader and Environmental Educator so work with both adults and children on all sorts of things. I also volunteer as a Master Composter and Master Gardener, helping people make compost and grow veg.
So, I might talk about; what we have been doing on our patch of land and in our wood, my work, the chickens and their funny ways, how to grow veg, the fun things our cats get up to, self sufficiency and what it actually means, more general environmental issues, composting, making various crafty stuff, happy and sad times here, living a slower, more hand made, frugal lifestyle, making and mending and re-using and re-cycling stuff, living more lightly on the Earth and my views on life in general.
I hope you enjoy your time spent inside The Compost Bin. I would also love to welcome you as a member of The Compostbin forum

I just came back from the Simple Green Frugal blog, and I loved the chutney post, especially since my family and I eat so much of it. I asked the question over there, but wondering how the flavors of the apples and courgette blend together?
Enjoyed the chutney post CW and have left a comment on the SGFB. It was very well written and informative and made interesting reading! Will most certainly be giving chutney making a good later on this year!!
Love Jane xxx
(p.s Hope you are all feeling better... bit of tlc for a day or two will maybe do the trick! Keep Warm!!xx)
Hiya! Livinginalocalzone, I posted a reply on the SGF post?...hope you saw it? I found it was a really nioce chutney and is one I will definately be making again ( but hten I don't think I have ever made a chutney I haven't made again!...
Aromatic, hi there! How is it going?
I spent today re arranging the chicken houses and runs...(oooops) and am now feeling very tired and achey...but happy as I spent 3 hours with my beloved chickens and Compostman, out in the garden. Compostgirl is a bit poorly and so she stayed indoors watching a DVD of "Coppelia" ( the ballet) ....with Tom kitten on her lap ( bless)
I am glad you found the SGF post helpful...
next one on either compost, leaf mould or growing plants for free..not sure what to write about first!
Am also putting the flesh on the bones of my book.....I find I am "on a roll" writing so am doing a few more chapters while it is too nasty outside to work on the garden.....
maybe it will be finished within the decade...we will see!
